Alzheimer’s disease and Diabetes
What is the relation between alzheimer’s and diabetes? In a recent study, a team of researchers found that the levels of insulin drop dramatically as alzheimer’s disease progresses. Using the brain tissue of 45 patients at various stages of alzheimer’s disease, they also found that as alzheimer’s progresses, the ability of the brain to respond to insulin decreases and they were able to show that many of the unexplained and advanced characteristics of alzheimer’s are related to the abnormalities of insulin production. Based on these observations, senior researcher Suzanne M. de la Monte said alzheimer’s could be a form of diabetes. The results of the study appear in the November issue of Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.
