Author Helps Aspiring Writers and Diabetes Research

by Rob Rummel-Hudson on April 27th, 2006

For the second year running, California romance-suspense novelist Brenda Novak has established an auction to assist aspiring romance authors while raising money for diabetes research. One of her five children is diabetic.

In addition to donated items such as autographed books by established authors like Nora Roberts and Nick Hornby, the auction will also feature offerings of particular value to new writers, such as advice from literary agents and meetings with published romance writers. A number of romance editors have even agreed to read and assess the manuscripts of winning bidders.

“Most of the big houses don’t accept unsolicited submissions anymore,” Novak said. “This auction will provide a way for someone with talent to get noticed, which is becoming increasingly difficult. And it can be as hard to get a good agent as it can be to get in front of an editor. A winning bid puts (a would-be romancer) in front of someone with an eye for talent and the power to buy.”

Last year’s auction raised nearly $35,000, which was donated for diabetes research. The auction will run the whole month of May, 2006.
