Big Apple apparently caramel-coated

New York City has a higher occurrence of diabetes than the rest of the nation, with one in eight New Yorkers suffering from the disease, according to a report by the city’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene,
The report also shows that over 100,000 city residents have diabetes that is seriously out of control, and more that 200,000 New Yorkers aren’t even aware that they are diabetic.
Some of the findings were expected; diabetes is generally more prevalent among nonwhites, for example, who present a majority of the city’s population. Other results, such as the high occurrence (16 percent) among the city’s Asian population, came as a surprise.
“This confirms that we as a society are doing a rotten job both preventing and controlling diabetes,” said Dr. Thomas R. Frieden, the city health commissioner. “We can do a much better job helping people with diabetes get their condition under better control.”
