Diabetes Cure! But read the fine print…

by Rob Rummel-Hudson on September 28th, 2006

According to the New England Journal of Medicine, transplanting islet cells from the pancreases of dead people into type 1 diabetics allowed many of them - 21 out of 36 subjects - to stop taking insulin.

Unfortunately, after two years, 76 percent of the patients once again required insulin, according tot he researchers at the University of Alberta.

Even with this setback, there was some good long-term news. Some of the patients who had to return to insulin still maintained enough function in their transplanted cells that they were protected from severe drops in their blood glucose levels.

of course they would require the insulin again. The pancreatic cells would be rejected, necrotiseda nd you need either new cells or insulin. No doubt.

Also type 1 diabetes is just 10% of all cases. What to do with type 2?
