Dogs Can Smell Diabetes

by Kendra James, RN on November 25th, 2007

“Anecdotal reports suggest that some dogs can perform early warning of hypoglycemia by using their sense of smell to sniff out if their owner’s blood sugar levels are dropping,” Dr Wells said.”

dsc01453.JPGThis is interesting enough if it proves to pan out. Just imagine if dogs could really be trained to have this type of powerful sniffer! That would be brilliant. You could have a k-9 companion and peace of mind.

A Side note: This photo is a picture of our 12 year old black lab that passed away last week. She was our first “baby”.

I wholeheartedly believe it. Proof? I have none, haha, I just place a lot of…well, I don’t know what the word is, but I tend to believe - or at least give a lot of consideration to - much of what I hear about animals. I’ve also heard they can “smell” cancer.

This is not new news! Molly with the blog Dam Diabetes has a dog that smells her hypos. Dixie is wonderful! I am surprised you didn’t know this! The down side is that such dogs are extremely expensive!

Nope, sorry I didn’t know of Dixie the dog. I actually have never seen the site before, but I will check it out now. Though not new news, certainly interesting…:)
