Drug helps in kidney protection of diabetics
One of the major side affects of diabetes is damage of kidneys. The risk is especially high in
those diabetics with high blood pressure. Two types of drugs - ACE inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), are used to protect the kidneys of diabetics. European researchers have found that adding a drug called spironolactone to the standard blood pressure lowering therapy helps in reducing the blood pressure. The researchers studied 21 patients with type 2 diabetes. They found that the blood pressure fell by 6 to 4 points and urinary albumin levels fell by 33 percent. Though further studies are needed, the researchers feel that spironolactone may offer beneficial renal and cardiovascular protection. The findings of the study appear in Diabetes Care.
