Europeans Take On Type 2
Officials with the European Union warn that the number of diabetics in Europe could nearly triple to 60 million in the next twenty years unless a concentrated effort to increase exercise and improve diets is made by member states. Of the twenty-five EU member states, fourteen have not yet put in place any national health initiative to address Type 2 diabetes.
Earlier this month, about 350 members of the European parliament adopted a resolution calling for increased EU spending on diabetes and a joint prevention program, calling Type 2 diabetes a “global pandemic”.
Currently, approximately 22.5 million Europeans suffer from Type 2 diabetes, acccording to a report published by trhe World Health Organization and quoted by Maria Rauch-Kallat, health minister of Austria which holds the European Union’s rotating presidency.
“Diabetes is avoidable and preventable and that is why it is absolutely necessary to take it seriously,” Rauch-Kallat said.
