Existence of “metabolic syndrome” questioned
"Metabolic syndrome" is a condition widely seen as a predictor of cardiovascular disease. Anyone with three or more of the following conditions is said to have metabolic syndrome - a large waist
circumference, high triglyceride levels, high blood pressure,
low levels of HDL "good" cholesterol and high blood glucose. Two leading diabetes organizations, American Diabetes Association and European Association for the study of Diabetes have questioned the existence of metabolic syndrome. A strongly worded statement issued by them says that the syndrome was "poorly defined, inconsistently used and in need of further research". A paper to be published in the September issue of Diabetes Care and Diabetologia suggests that doctors should treat metabolic syndrome as a separate condition or should not diagnose it, until the science behind it is clear.
