Experimental Research In Stem Cell Transplants Enables Type 1 Diabetics To Live Medication Free

by Kendra James, RN on April 17th, 2007

A first in stem cell transplants. Yeah, I am soooo excited for the future.

Thirteen young diabetics in Brazil have ditched their insulin shots and need no other medication thanks to a risky, but promising treatment with their own stem cells — apparently the first time such a feat has been accomplished.

It is the first time that type 1 diabetics anywhere has gone with absolutely no medications and had normal blood sugars.

Though too early to call it a cure, the procedure has enabled the young people, who have Type I diabetes, to live insulin-free so far, some as long as three years.

brazils1.jpgWhy Brazil? According to the doctor who wrote the research protocol, American doctors were not interested in this type of approach. What are the benefits of using your own cells opposed to cadaver stem cells which has been previously studied?

A study published last year described a different kind of experimental transplant, using pancreas cells from donated cadavers, that enabled a few diabetics to give up insulin shots. But that requires lifelong use of anti-rejection medicine, which isn’t needed by the Brazil patients since the stem cells were their own.

These results are both exciting and promising even for diabetics that don’t get all geeked up on research. Can’t wait to see if this type of stem cell research is approached by an American doctor due to the success of the small, but pioneering study.
