Fast Food Choices With Diabetic Considerations, Yes It Can Be Done!

by Kendra James, RN on April 25th, 2007

playlands.jpgSometimes I feel like if I am not at home, I just shouldn’t eat. The constant thought of sugars, carbs, fat and if you have energy left over after all that, taste. It can be done though. Take this from a mom of 3 little girls who appreciate a good happy meal and indoor playground. This is what I have found works for me…

McDonalds:

Side salad: 4g carb, 2g sugar (with ranch dressing add 2g carbs)

Grilled Snack wrap with ranch dressing: 26g carb, 2g sugar

Pair with a diet coke, non sweetened iced tea or water bottle. Pretty satisfying meal! I actually had this last week, darn good if I must say so myself.

Wendy’s:

Caesar side salad: 6g carb, 1g suagr (with caesar dressing add 1g sugar and 1g carb)

Small chili: 23g carb and 6g sugar

Again, diet drink or water and your set. This is my fave fast food meal to get, I am a fan of chili. Wendy’s even offers a diabetic exchange menu if you ask for it, maks it nice and easy. You have no excuses!

Burger King:

Hamburger: 30g carb, 6g sugar

Side salad: 3g carb, 1gsugar (with ranch dressing add 1g carb and 1g sugar)

And yet again, a Diet Coke or water to wash it down.

Burger King also offers a build a meal plan online. They offer diabetic, low carb and healthy choices as categories. I am pretty sure the Whopper was not on it though. LOL.

Taco Bell:

Crunchy Taco Supreme El Fresco: 14g carb and 2g sugar

Heck, you can even eat 2 if you are feeling extra hungry. Yee-ha! Wash it down with a Diet Pepsi.

So, there you have it. You can indeed find food outside your house, fast, quick and without sending your blood sugar through the roof. I am not guaranteeing it to be without salt or fat, but it is not as bad as many other choices!
