I am not a smart man.

Okay, so here’s the deal. I was going to post something about a study done at the Ottawa Health Research Institute. (Note to ugly Americans: That’s in Canada.) This study suggested there may be a link between Creutzfeld-Jakob disease (”mad cow disease”) and type 1 diabetes.
Here’s my problem. I’ve read it like three times so far, and I don’t have a clue what they are saying.
It centers around a protein that causes mad cow disease and the role it plays in how the cells of the pancreas produce insulin.
But I just can’t seem to understand what they’re saying the connection might be.
My brain hurts. Maybe you can figure it out.
(via canada.com, eh.)

I read it too and was going to mention it in my blog. They know that a particular mutated protein plays a role in causing the “Mad Cow” disease. This same protein, in its HEALTHY form could be related to the cause of T1. They have noted that when bg rises after a meal, these proteins change form, react to to the rise in bg. These proteins group into clusters when bg rises. They may be in some way tied to insulin release in a healthy pancreas. They could be the link that tells our betacells to produce insulin.

I agree - it’s about as easy to understand as a Tax form! Give them Top marks for plain speaking…they seem to be saying they have founds “links” but then the sun and rain are linked, they are both “weather”!

Come on - the article isn’t that bad. I wrote about it also on my blog!
