Most Diabetics Fail to Get Important Tests

by Rob Rummel-Hudson on April 28th, 2006

According to the U.S. government, most adults with diabetes fail to get three annual medical tests recommended for diabetics.

The three tests include the Hemoglobin A1c, which tests blood sugar averages for the previous two to three months; dilated eye exam, in which the patient’s pupils are dilated in order to allow an eye doctor to examine the eye’s interior; and a check of the patient’s feet for nerve problems and proper circulation.

According to a 2003 report by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, of the 14 million civilian, noninstitutionalized adult diabetics in the U.S., nearly 42 percent got all three tests. About 50 percent received one or two of the tests, while about 5 percent got none of the tests. The rest did not know if they had gotten the tests or not.

The report showed that patients who got all three tests were more likely to be white, to have medical insurance, and to be 65 or older.

As of 2005, about 6 million Americans were unaware they had diabetes.
