My Very Honest Diabetic Food, Bloodsugar and Exercise Journal

by Kendra James, RN on January 3rd, 2008

october-and-the-girls-032.jpgWhile driving home a short while ago I came up with an idea! I know it is shocking. If I could ever get my head to turn off it would be a small miracle… Anyway, I thought that every evening I would post what I had eaten that day as well as my blood sugar readings. Kind of like a journal of sorts. It will be as much for me as you.

I think this will help me to ensure that I stay right on track and keep my diet tight and under control as well as showing you what foods have an effect on MY blood sugars. I know that everyone is different but there are some foods/carbs that will be no brainers and will have effects across the board.

I will also record my daily activity/exercise. Oh boy, I am feeling brave. I am not going to lie one bit either so you must be forgiving at times and remember that I am human too and that although I have extended knowledge, I might not always put it to good use. Is that a deal?

I will start right now, I am feeling lucky, haha.

Breakfast…1 diet coke, instead of coffee, 1 serving size of cereal with skim milk, 30 grams carbs together.

Mid morning… 3-4 glasses of water, I love water!!!!!!

Lunch… turkey sandwich with lettuce/tomato/onion and 1/2 slice cheese, on a whole wheat wrap, 40carbs. I tole you I was not going to lie, and I was in the car and should have packed something but didn’t. Well darn it! I also had an unsweetened iced tea.

I will update y’all this evening. I think my hubby and I will just have soup and fruit after swim practice with the kids.

I am also going to the gym while kids are in swim. I will keep you posted. And feel free to comment in your daily intake and such to keep you straight and honest with yourself.

[...] Go check it out. I think it will benefit both myself and readers. I can keep close track of everything and ensure that I am being totally crystal clear honest with myself, no hiding a darn thing. I am pretty good to begin with- I eat healthy and exercise, but we all need some reminding every once in a while. And feel free to post away and leave comments, both good and bad, and use it to keep yourself on track. I also am keeping a logbook. Though not yet online, I also am noticing that certain foods and excess quantity can effect the blood glucose levels. To date, my lowest has been 79. It is a chore to do daily, but it beets having to face the complications for not acting on this today.

    Good luck with your journal.

I’m actaully kind of excited about starting to keep track of this stuff myself. This coming from the guy that bought a blood sugar meter just for fun. I wanted to prove that dreamfields pasta is a scam but never quite did. :)

Dirk- Awesome! I agree, it is a pain in the ol’… but better now then face some nasty consequences down the road, and for me it is really great because my kids see how healthy food is so much better for them- it is more concrete.:)

Cozmo- Pasta… I def do not do a lot of that anymore. I wish you success as well, and f you find anything good, don’t forget to share!

This is a great idea! I’m searching for an accurate ‘logbook’ in which I can record my BS numbers and what I eat. The only problem is that I’m also pregnant and there is no logbook yet that allows for random midmorning snacks, ect. Does anyone know of either an online logbook or a printable file with flexability on eating schedules? I’m tired of having one book for my numbers and another book for my food (which I haven’t started writing down b/c it’s not organized enough and gives me a headache just thinking about it!). It would be great if I was able to easily email/fax all this info to my doctors and nutritionists too! Is this asking too much? I hope not…I was hoping I wasn’t going to have to become a programer to come up with something that will finally work for me!
