New improved ways to manage diabetes

by Maruthi on September 12th, 2005

Various methods are being used by health care professionals to monitor and manage diabetes better, as the disease continues to spread at an alarming rate through out the world.  The latest step is the use of information technology to collect and manage diabetes data.

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is planning to collect A1c hemoglobin blood sugar levels from all 127 laboratories in the city and maintain the data electronically.  All of these 127 laboratories are connected to the Electronic Clinical Laboratory Reporting System (ECLRS), run by New York state.  This data will be used to develop a diabetic patient registry and will help the department reach out to thousands of diabetic patients in the city and also to those people who are yet to be diagnosed.  This data will help the department in alerting the doctors as well as their patients when the blood sugar level raises abnormally.

Similar methods are being used elsewhere too.  In Tasmania, Australia, a web based program is being tested to manage diabetic records better.  These methods will go a long way in cutting diabetic related health care costs, which is to the tune of $132 billion in the United States alone.
