New laser treatment to prevent diabetic limb amputation

by Maruthi on February 16th, 2006

Every year thousands of people lose their limbs to diabetes. Diabetes could block the free flow of blood and hence cause various problems from numbness to pain and finally to amputation (a sad fact is that most of the amputations could be prevented if the diabetics take proper care of their feet). A new laser technique has been developed that removes blocks in the nerves caused by diabetes and helps in improving the blood circulation. This laser technique uses ultraviolet energy to destroy blockages with high precision. The technique, called excimer, was tested on 119 diabetics and only 9 of them lost their limb to the disease within 6 months of getting the treatment. The study appears in the current issue of Journal of Endovascular Therapy.
