New treatment for diabetes in the next 10 years
A new form of treatment for diabetes is being tested at the Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism. The idea is to transplant insulin producing cells from a donated pancreas into the liver of the diabetes patient. This will help the patients to produce their own insulin, eliminating the need to inject insulin everyday. The operation will benefit both children and adults and will also help in preventing kidney failure and blindness. Though the operation is fairly simple, it might take five to ten years to perfect it.
