Now Showing: Online Health Records Courtesy Of Google

by Kendra James, RN on January 24th, 2008

googlehealthnumber2.jpgI also shared this over at A Hearty Life this morning but it is a good find so I must share it here as well…I don’t know how I feel about all this, that is for sure. As I read on TechCrunch this morning, it seems that a login page for Google Health was spotted and will be Google’s entry into online health records. You can not actually login here yet, but it does offer up…

With Google Health, you can:
* Build online health profiles that belong to you
* Download medical records from doctors and pharmacies
* Get personalized health guidance and relevant news
* Find qualified doctors and connect to time-saving services
* Share selected information with family or caregivers

I know that this is not specific to diabetes and but it does have the potential to touch each and every one of us that is active in today’s health care system which is… everyone! What do you think about this idea? HIPPA scary or heck yes I would use it? It does frighten me a bit, but it shouldn’t as I do order things online and that is my financial information. I’ll have to think on this one!

Are your worries about your personal health information getting out once it’s online?

It’s all about security and your level of comfort in the potential that your health information are know, shared and abused. How secure are your information once it’s online - whether financial or health. Who gets access and can it be hacked?
On the other hand, your information at your doctor’s office - how secure is that? God forbid, but if the records are burned, would they have back ups (that hopefully, an online database would)…
