Diabetes Notes

Once again, the wee get screwed. Sorry.

We all know the high risk of developing type 2 diabetes if you are overweight. According to a study in the July edition of Diabetes Care, however, just having short legs might increase your risk as well.

Researchers for the study, including Keiko Asao, M.D., MPH, of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, studied data from a U.S. health survey from 1988-1994. Participants in the study included about 3,600 men and 3,800 women aged 40 to 74 years, with an average age of about 55.

Simply being short does not appear to have an effect on your risk of developing diabetes, although I can imagine it’s still no fun. But based on blood sugar tests given during the study, having a low leg-to-height ratio was associated with a slightly higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes, even after weighing other risk factors.

What does this mean? The researchers aren’t sure. Wonky hormones or poor nutrition before birth or in early childhood may affect both body development and the risk of diabetes, they suggest.

As for me, I’m 6′2″, and I got it. You shorties are on your own this time. I’ll still help you reach the sugar-free cookies at the supermarket, though. I’m not made of stone.
