Passive smoking increases diabetes risk
Passive smoking increases the risk of diabetes, according to researchers from Birmingham Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Alabama. They studied 4,572 smokers aged from 18 to 30 years with a follow up after 15 years and found that
- 22 percent of the smokers developed diabetes
- 12 percent of the non smokers who were not exposed to smoke developed diabetes
- 17 percent of the non smokers who were exposed to tobacco smoke developed diabetes
They also found that every 10 pack years of smoking increases the risk of diabetes by 18 percent in smokers - one more reason to ban smoking in public places.
