Peripheral Artery Disease increases risk of heart related death in type 2 diabetics

by Maruthi on March 28th, 2006

A recent study has found that Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) could increase the risk of death from heart ailments in type 2 diabetic patients. If the ratio of blood pressure in the ankle to the blood pressure in the arm (known as Ankle-Brachial Index - ABI) is lesser than 1, then the blood flow is not normal. The researchers noted a relation between abnormal values of ABI (lesser than 0.90) and an increase in the risk of heart-related death. They analyzed PAD data from nearly 1,300 type 2 diabetics.
