Personalised medicines, a possibility?
Medicines made especially for you, how does it sound? These medicines will be based on the patient’s own genes. They are already playing a role in the treatment of some types of cancer like breast cancer. There is a hope that these kind of medicines can be extended to other diseases like diabetes and heart problems. A report from UK’s National academy of science titled ‘ Personalised medicines: hopes and realities’ says that these medicines are a definitely a possibility, but not in the near future. For the time being, there is more hype than substance over these type of medicines.
