Pharm companies team up to develop nasal spray for type 2
Nastech Pharmaceutical Co. Inc. announced that it has reached an agreement with Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Inc. to develop a nasal spray version of exenatide, for use in treatment of type 2 diabetes.
The injectable form of exenatide is sold under the name Byetta. It improves blood sugar in adults who suffer from type 2 diabetes by helping the body produce the correct amount of insulin at the right time, rather than simply adding insulin to the body.
And I would be remiss in my duties if I did not point out at this time that Byetta is made from Gila Monster saliva.

No joke. Gila Monster slobber. Not even Gila Monster venom, because that would at least make sense. Gila Monsters are one of only two venomous lizards in the world (the other being one that basically looks exactly like a Gila Monster and lives in practically the same place), so I can imagine researchers exploring the medicinal properties of the venom.
But really, I want to know about the guy who said, “Say, I wonder what Gila Monster drool would do for blood sugar levels?”
