Rise in diabetes deaths

by Maruthi on September 20th, 2005

The number of deaths due to diabetes worldwide is increasing every year, according to a report published in the journal Diabetes Care.  Normally international death statistics are collected based on the death certificates which do not yield always accurate results.  In order to estimate the numbers accurately, the researchers used a computerized disease model.  This model assessed the disease burden using a variety of relationships, using age, sex and disease-specific mortality.   Some of the estimates are

  • 7.5 million people with diabetes died in 2000
  • Out of this 7.5 million, 4.6 million people died of other causes while 2.9  million died of diabetes
  • Out of the 2.9 million deaths due to diabetes, 1.9 occured in developed nations and 1 million occured in developing countries
  • In 2000, the proportion of deaths due to diabetes worldwide was 5.2 percent
  • Poor african countries and Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and Myanmar had lowest proportion of deaths at 2.4 percent while the Arabian peninsula and the americas had the highest proportion at 9 percent and 8.5 percent respectively.

From these estimates, the researchers conclude that globally, diabetes could be the fifth leading cause of death.
