Savings Found Among Insulin Pen Users

by Kendra James, RN on August 22nd, 2007

A new study found that using an insulin pen may result in fewer trips to the emergency department and to the doctor’s office, resulting in substantial savings to diabetics and their insurers.

insulin-pen.jpgHow does $17,000 in savings grab you? Uh huh, I said 17 thousand. Switching from insulin to an insulin pen could save you just that amount. The insulin pen is more accurate in that it gives a specific measured amount, meaning less chance of a mistake. We all know that mistakes with insulin often lead to doctor and hospital visits, so this would put you in the green.

We also know that there is a drawback with almost everything that goes along with health care. What is the issue here? The initial cost of “pen users” compared with “syringe users” is higher. And when the annual cost of prescriptions of both were compared, the pen was a slight bit higher. But I urge you to look past the before mentioned and think of the long term positive findings. Less hospitalizations, less doctors visits, less complications and a much happier diabetic!
