Women who take the diabetes drugs Avandia, Avandamet or Avandaryl may be more like to suffer bone fractures than patients taking other diabetes drugs, according to the FDA and GlaxoSmithKilne, maker of the drugs.

All three drugs include the active ingredient rosiglitazone. GlaxoSmithKilne informed doctors of the risk of bone fracture in a recent letter, which is posted on the FDA’s web site.

It is not yet known how the drug affects the risk of fracture in women. Men taking rosiglitazone did not experience the problem.
