Diabetes Notes

Stupid, Stupid, Stupid Diabetic Comments Really Get My Goat!

by Kendra James, RN on January 9th, 2008

screws.jpgscrews.jpgscrews.jpgscrews.jpgscrews.jpgscrews.jpg“He is having pin put in his leg tonight and you know… he is a diabetic, so he won’t fare well at all”. Are you kidding me? Do these statements still exist? I get all fired up. My mother in law, no worries (she doesn’t read this), called to let us know that our ‘Uncle ‘ Chuck had fallen from a ladder that was attached to a 3 story house. Yes he fell all the way down!

Uncle Chuck ended up breaking his femur and with some facial lacerations and a few cracked ribs, but no internal bleeding or injuries. Thank goodness!!!! He did have to have a rod and screws put in place, and earned himself a Medivac ride, helicopter, due to where they live (that is exciting) but I consider him very lucky and I have no worries that he will pull through just fine.

But honestly, “He is having pin put in his leg tonight and you know… he is a diabetic, so he won’t fare well at all” was the first comment made to me. So what did I say? So?????? What does that mean????? Her response, “the anesthesia and all, he will have a hard time in surgery because of the diabetes”. Come on! Now if she would have mentioned the healing process I would have excused her comment, but nope, not gonna do it, :).

I get so frustrated at the way that diabetes is treated by people, especially those that do not attempt to learn about it at all. With it being so prevalent, you would think that people would want to learn as much as they can on how to prevent, deal and treat it. But once again, it was my mother in law, hahahahaha:). (Sidenote: I do like my mother in law-she just has no medical knowledge what so ever)

And my thoughts are with Uncle Chuck for a speedy recovery!!

I would never have thought that just because someone is diabetic they’d have problems with anesthesia! But like you mentioned, I would assume that the healing process would end up being more complicated.

Mark- you hit the nail on the head, or pin, hahaha

Grace- Exactly!!!! But in her world diabetes equals a horrible existence and death. She has no clue and I have tried to gently teach her over the last few years but she doesn’t care, or doesn’t get it. (my hubby leans towards the latter), haha:)

Sounds like people I know who just like to make dire predictions because they THINK it makes them sound more worldly or knowledgeable.

I’m not a medical professional, but that still sounds ridiculous to me. Blanket statements are often false.

Oh Kendra, I had to laugh at your post - not because it was funny - but because it so could have been a phone conversation between me and my mom (don’t worry, she doesn’t read this).

Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Uncle Chuck!
