Type 1 and MS linked by Danes

by Rob Rummel-Hudson on July 12th, 2006

According to a new Danish study, Type 1 diabetics are more than three times as likely to develop multiple sclerosis as those without diabetes. Additionally, researchers found that the two diseases appear to be linked within families.

The study was reported in the Archives of Neurology and was conducted by Dr. Nete M. Nielsen and associates from the Statens Serum Institut in Copenhagen. While a link between type 1 diabetes and MS have been identified in the past, this study collected evidence from a much larger sample of patients than before.

Researchers studied the occurance of MS in 6078 patients with type 1 diabetes over a decade. Additionally, the researchers studied the presence of type 1 diabetes in 14,771 first-degree relatives of 11,862 MS patients.

“To our knowledge, the present study is the first truly nationwide cohort study to demonstrate intraindividual and, to a lesser degree, intrafamilial co-occurrence of MS and type 1 diabetes,” the investigators write. “The underlying mechanisms remain unknown, but may involve both genetic and environmental factors.”
