Vandross’s mother promotes diabetes awareness

Mary Ida Vandross, the 82 year-old mother of the late R&B sensation Luther Vandross, is urging people to get checked for diabetes, the illness that claimed her son’s life last year at the age of 54.
Vandross said that her son’s death followed that of his father, two of her other children and one grandchild from complications related to diabetes. She said Luther’s diabetes was most likely a result of both genetic factors and an unhealthy lifestyle. At his heaviest, the singing star weighed over 300 pounds.
“It is with me daily that my family was taken from me,” she said. “Diabetes is really dangerous. Just get yourself checked.”
Her appeal coincides with the release of the Diabetes Aware Generaltional Survey by the Danish insulin maker Novo Nordisk, which found thatmost people who suffer from diabetes are aware of the preventative effects of diet and exercise, yet only one inn five actually exercise regularly and eat healthy foods.
