Wal Mart Teams Up To Help In The Treatment Of Diabetes

by Kendra James, RN on September 26th, 2007

Leave it to the power house of all discount pricing Wal Mart to help battle diabetes and provide a more affordable kind of health care. Seriously speaking, it is a great contribution to this region of America. Over 7% of the US population has diabetes and I can guarantee that half of Americans do not have the resources to treat their disease!

Wal Mart is teaming up with Delta Regional Authority (DRA) to help persons prevent, and treat their diabetes. Through the health fairs that will be provided, residents will be encouraged to see health care professionals and keep on top of managing their illness.

Each Hometown Health Fair will include free biometric screenings: body composition, including weight, body fat and body mass index; total cholesterol check; HDL, LDL and triglycerides levels and glucose level checks available for 200 people at each Saturday event. Free blood pressure screenings and other health information will also be available.

If you’re interested in learning more about the hometown health fairs, visit the Healthy Delta website. And just what is DRA you ask?

The Delta Regional Authority is a federal-state partnership that serves 240 counties and parishes in parts of Arkansas, Alabama, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee. Pete Johnson of Clarksdale, Miss., was appointed by President Bush and confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the DRA federal co-chairman in 2001. Johnson and the governors of the eight states comprise the DRA board. The DRA operates a highly successful grant program in each of the eight states it serves. The program allows cash-strapped cities and counties to leverage money from other agencies. The DRA also has expanded its regional initiatives in the areas of health care, transportation and information technology. To learn more visit http://www.dra.gov.
