What Will Happen To GlaxoSmithKline’s Avandia?
What do you all think of the Avandia coverage? Do you think that there is someone to blame at the level of FDA approval? For me, a RN, it will be interesting to see what happens in clinical practice. Though the research was fairly astounding, there will still be some cases in which Avandia will and should be used. It’s kind of like the whole Vioxx situation, there are still patients that are prescribed Cox 2 inhibitors and use them on a daily basis, under the care of their physician.
I have already seen the prescribing of Avandia decrease over the last few months, due to the fact that I work on a cardiac floor. The patient population that I deal with are typically heart patients with very big cardiac disease and very prevalent cardiac history. It’s a no brainer!
Do you think that there will be large class action lawsuits that will occur on the heels of all the coverage of the increased cardiac risks associated with Avandia? I have already received emails from politicians and groups saying that they are looking into the matter and look to “right” the situation. I know one thing, the next few months will be interesting for GlaxoSmithKline, the manufacturer of Avandia.

I work for a plaintiffs’ personal injury firm. There will be lawsuits as a result of this drug. However, it’s a losing cause. A lot of plaintiffs’ attorneys will not put their money on Avandia. First of all, the defense attorneys have a great defense against us: Diabetics are already at risk for heart attacks. Plus, if you are obese, have high blood pressure and high cholesterol, it would be virtually impossible to prove someone’s heart attack was caused by Avandia. I think the government needs to address the FDA and their complete failure in this matter.

I am sure they are hoping the June release of that bogus weight loss drug, Alli, will detract from this a bit, both in terms of publicity and profits. :)
